Partly opposing our initial hypothesis, we found that alcohol intoxication interfered with the automatization of motor response sequences more strongly than with their controlled execution. Moreover, alcohol intoxication eradicated learning effects on response selection and planning, irrespective of automatization. Given the prevalent focus on directly addiction-related aspects of alcohol consumption in research, it has also rarely been investigated whether alcohol-unrelated action sequences are affected as well. Given that this would be needed to identify a general shift in cognitive functioning , it is important to focus on processes, which are involved in planning and execution of motor response sequences40. If the same motor response sequence is repeatedly executed and/or rewarded, increasingly stronger stimulus–response (S-R) associations are established, which ultimately results in the automatization of the given motor response sequence. Generally, the automatization of motor response sequences is a highly efficient way of prompting and organizing various behaviors41,42, but at the price that automatization leads to desensitization towards outcome devaluation43,44,45. The latter may give rise to dysfunctional behavior like excessive drinking, as behavior will then be maintained despite negative outcomes39,43,44,46.

Symptoms

This is because the alcohol he drank was spread into a smaller water «space.» This explains the apparent sobering effect of food, which slows the process of emptying the stomach contents, slows the absorption of alcohol, and thus reduces the peak blood alcohol concentration reached. However, heavy alcohol users may have a number of metabolic derangements that are worth screening for, so complete blood count, electrolytes , liver tests (including coagulation profile [PT/PTT]), and serum albumin are often recommended.

Recent intake of alcohol can be assessed from the history, physical examination (e.g., alcohol on the breath), or toxicological analysis of urine or blood. The specific clinical picture of alcohol intoxication depends on quantity and frequency of consumption, the duration of drinking at that level, tolerance, time since last drink, expectations of effects, and the environment or setting of drinking. Patients with ethanol intoxication can usually be observed until they are no longer clinically intoxicated and then discharged. Patients with isopropanol ingestion may require observation in the hospital. Patients with significant ingestions of toxic alcohols require hospital admission in a closely monitored setting such as the intensive care unit.
